Rep. Keith Self Files Amendment to Block US CBDC in Defense Bill
Republican Congressman Keith Self of Texas has introduced an amendment to the annual defense bill aimed at prohibiting the creation of a U.S. central bank digital currency. The MOVE comes after GOP leaders allegedly reneged on a promise to include anti-CBDC language in the legislation.
The amendment, dubbed the 'Anti-CBDC Surveillance State,' WOULD prevent the Federal Reserve from developing or issuing a digital dollar. It also bars Fed banks from offering direct accounts to individuals—a provision supporters argue safeguards against government-controlled banking.
House leaders are pushing to pass the defense package by Wednesday afternoon, though negotiations remain fluid. The debate highlights growing political tensions over financial privacy and the role of government in digital currency.
